Prices for this wild Shelby creation start at $225,995, including the base Mustang Dark Horse
We knew that Shelby American was cooking up something special, and this is it. Dubbed the Shelby Super Snake-R, this insane Ford Mustang Dark Horse-based monster is premiering during Monterey Car Week and promises to be much more than a monster in a straight line. According to Shelby, it’s the best handling car it has ever built.

Building upon the already remarkable Super Snake, the new R version retains the Ford 5.0-liter Coyote and adds a supercharger to it, allowing power to be increased from 500 hp to over 850 horses.
Keen drivers will also be pleased to know that the car can be optioned with either a Tremec six-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic. Regardless of which transmission is selected, power is transmitted exclusively through the rear wheels.
Track-Ready Chassis Upgrades
To help it cope with the added power, Shelby has equipped the Super Snake-R with fully adjustable coilovers and swapped out rubber bushings for metal spherical bearings, improving rigidity and response. A rear strut bar now connects the shock towers, and the braking system has been upgraded as well.
Shelby American says its Super Snake-R tips the scales at 4,004 lbs or 116 lbs more than the standard Dark Horse. But, given all the extra power it has, it’ll be a whole lot faster.
Looks To Match The Performance
Then there are the visuals. All Shelby Super Snake-R models come complete with overhauled body panels, including carbon fiber on the front fenders, hood vents, front splitter, rear diffuser, and the massive fixed rear wing.
Flared arches are also found at the rear, housing a set of custom-made 20-inch forged magnesium wheels. These wheels save 9 pounds per corner and allow for the fitment of massive tires, including 335 mm section rubber at the rear.
Shoppers will be able to order the car in either Grabber Blue Metallic, Race Red, Oxford White, Shadow Black, or Carbonized Gray Metallic.
Loads of changes have also been made to the muscle car’s interior. The seats have been retrimmed in Shelby-branded leather with Alcantara inserts, and manual models get a custom billet shift knob. A serialized plaque has also been added to the dash alongside embroidered floor mats, puddle lamps, and sill plates.
One Very Expensive Pony Car
Prices for the new Shelby Super Snake-R kick off from $225,995, including the price of the donor Mustang Dark Horse. That’s a steep figure, especially considering it surpasses the MSRP of Chevrolet’s Corvette ZR1X “hypercar”, America’s fastest production car around the Nürburgring, which comes in at $207,395.
Every Super Snake-R includes a 3-year / 36,000-mile warranty and retains the original Ford powertrain coverage.
