STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Richmond Road remains closed early Saturday afternoon, after a single-car crash knocked down a utility pole, causing traffic chaos surrounding a busy stretch of the New Dorp street, according to initial reports.
Police were on site at 10 a.m., and no driver was visible in the vehicle, which had airbags deployed, according to a reporter at the scene.
Con Edison was on the scene by noon Saturday, working to right the pole, while traffic jams continued.
Traffic diversion was affecting many New Dorp residential streets, including Bryant, Otis and Bancroft avenues, according to initial reports.
The grey Nissan sedan appeared to have struck the pole, sparing it from hitting the Moravian Cemetery stone wall.
This initial report has been updated and will continue to be updated as information becomes available.
