They found a young man with serious injuries on the forecourt in Seaham, County Durham, and he tragically died at the scene.
Three men have since been arrested as part of a murder probe launched by Durham Police.
Today, the forecourt of the station was awash with forensics and police cars, while a section of the road directly outside remained closed.
A resident, whose home is opposite the alleged murder scene, said: “I was in at the time.

“I was sat inside, and I saw lots of flashing, and heard sirens. I looked out of the window and I saw loads of police cars. I saw them doing CPR, and I guessed the man had probably died.
“I saw the paramedics running out of the ambulance, and then jumping up and down, which is not nice to see.
“They put a sheet up after that. There were so many police cars, I knew something bad had happened.”
A huge section of glass has been removed from the front of the Asda Express and a tarpaulin was put up to shield forensic officers from view.

A vehicle was also spotted behind the sheet, facing towards the shop entrance.
Photos from the scene showed the Asda Express window has been smashed.
Meanwhile, a tent had been erected on the edge of the forecourt, close to the road.
Local resident Julie Cook, a 44-year-old carer, added: “Someone has died, it’s absolutely shocking.
“I came to the shop opposite last night and there must have been hundreds of people here.
“There were flashing blue lights and I asked someone what had happened. He just said there had been a crash.
“I was absolutely gobsmacked when I found out the man had died and a murder investigation had been launched.
“I have lived here 12 years and it’s quiet. I have never known anything like this to happen.”
Another local, who also lives nearby, said: “We were told a car had gone into the window of the service station.
“It’s a really shocking thing to have happened. I saw the flashing lights at about ten to five.
“When they had the drone out, I thought this is definitely a serious crime.
“I am just waiting for the road to open now. The buses can’t get through.”
A steady stream of cars were forced to make U-turns as they came across the crime scene.
A spokesperson for Durham Police said earlier today: “A man has sadly died following an incident in Seaham yesterday.
“Officers responded to reports of a disturbance on Stockton Road at around 4.50pm yesterday (Thursday, January 15).
“A vehicle is believed to have collided with a pedestrian on the New Seaham Service Station forecourt, where a man in his 20s sustained serious injuries.
“Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
“A murder investigation is now underway, and three people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
“The section of the B1285 between the Mallard pub and the petrol station is likely to remain closed for some time while inquiries are carried out.
“Anybody with any information relating to the incident, or who has CCTV or dashcam footage in the area around the same time, is asked to contact Durham Police via 101, quoting incident number 281 of January 15.”

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: “We attended an incident at the service station on Stockton Road in Seaham just after 16.50h today (15 Jan).
“We dispatched a paramedic ambulance, a doctor in a rapid response car, a clinical team leader, a specialist paramedic and one of our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) crews following reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a car.”
