A second suspect is in custody, and a third suspect remains at large, police said.
CHICAGO (WLS) — An injured Chicago police officer fatally shot a burglary suspect on the city's West Side early Saturday morning, CPD said.
Police said a group of suspects allegedly burglarized a vehicle in the 5500-block of West Thomas Street before getting in a dark-colored sedan and fleeing southbound on North Waller Avenue.
Responding officers encountered the sedan near Chicago and Waller avenues around 3:45 a.m. The sedan hit two marked CPD vehicles, pinning an officer who then fired shots, striking one of the suspects.
The injured suspect was transported to Stroger Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Their identity was not immediately released.
A second suspect was taken into custody and later transported to a local hospital for unknown injuries, police said.
A third suspect dropped a gun while fleeing the scene. Officers chased that suspect, who is not in custody.
Two CPD officers were transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
ABC7 cameras were on the scene, where about two blocks were closed to traffic around 6 a.m.
Squad cars have surrounded a black sedan, which has visible damage on its front end.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating. The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days.
Further information was not immediately available.
