Nine people have been hospitalised after a rally car crashed into spectators at Walcha on Saturday night. (ABC News: Timothy Ailwood)
A person has been critically injured and another eight have been hospitalised after a car crashed into spectators at a motor rally event in regional New South Wales on Saturday night.
Police said emergency services were called to the Walcha Showground about 6:15pm after reports a vehicle competing in the event lost control and crashed into a mobile grandstand.
Spectators rendered first aid to those injured before NSW Ambulance paramedics transported seven men and two women to Walcha District Hospital, four of whom were expected to be transferred to major hospitals.
The most seriously injured was a 54-year-old man who suffered critical injuries.
Police believe the 27-year-old driver of the car that crashed into the crowd had been involved in an on-track collision before ploughing through the fence.
Officers from the specialist Crash Investigation Unit were last night on their way to Walcha to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
