State board approves closing of Alexian Brothers obstetric unit, with a less than ringing endorsement
The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board Tuesday voted 6-3 in favor of Ascension closing the 28-bed obstetric unit Alexian Brothers in Elk Grove Village. Ascension will close the unit within 60 days. Obstetric services will be consolidated at Ascension St. Alexius Women and Children’s Hospital in Hoffman Estates. Although the vote was decisive, even board members who voted yes raised concerns about closing the unit, which serves an underserved population.

Wheaton leaders are clear about what they want for the future of a vacant storefront downtown: retail. Carlson Hardware had been just that — a retail institution — at Front and Cross streets. Council members have voted against a special-use permit that would have allowed for a co-working space to occupy the main floor of the corner building. It’s intended to be an “intensively developed, compact area” consisting primarily of retailers, according to the city’s zoning ordinance.

Less than a decade ago, a Baptist seminary moved its main campus from Lombard to Lisle, leaving a uniquely shaped property east of the Yorktown Center shopping mall. Horton has floated a proposal to develop the former Northern Baptist Theological Seminary property with approximately 159 townhouse units.

Labor Department won’t release full October jobs report due to 43-day federal shutdown
The Labor Department said Wednesday that it will not be releasing a full jobs report for October because the 43-day federal government shutdown meant it couldn’t calculate the unemployment rate and some other key numbers. Instead, it will release some of the October jobs data — most importantly the number of jobs employers created last month — along with the full November jobs report, now on Dec. 16.
