OKLAHOMA CITY — Steve Gooch wasn’t necessarily looking to move. After opening The Floating Bookshop in 2023, he was content with the location on Film Row.
But with his lease coming to an end and the prospect of his rent increasing, Gooch, who also goes by Echo, kept an open mind when his friends approached him about a new home for the bookstore.
“When this building was about to close, our friends, Johnny and June, said, ‘Hey, this space on 9th Street is opening up. If you’re interested, we’ll put in a good word with the landlord for you,” Gooch recalled.
“I came and looked at the space a couple of times and just thought, you know, it’s a little bit of a risk because the space on Film Row had coffee and some other things that also drew people. But this house building just felt so perfect for a little bookstore.”
In December 2024, he packed up the hundreds of books, art and other pieces of swag and moved them to 3 NW 9th St in Automobile Alley. It didn’t take long for the shop to feel at home.

Gooch said he loves the neighboring businesses, including Factory Obscura, Iguana, Nash Bird and others in the area. “I thought this seemed like a good place. It’s still in the downtown area, which I really wanted.”
Still, Gooch admits the move wasn’t an easy decision. Leaving Film Row, where his shop had been for 15 months, had been working for him.
But Gooch, who grew up in Tulsa, said the gamble has paid off and business has been great since the move. He gives a lot of credit to his neighbors.
“I think just Automobile Alley and 9th Street are in people’s brains as a place to go. And then Factory Obscura draws so many people,” Gooch said.
He said he didn’t realize how many people from across the country visit Factory Obscura. “So, we’re a beneficiary of that. And we still get the same kind of downtown traffic that we did at the other location.”
The success runs counter to a national narrative that people have stopped buying and reading books.
According to a 2022 National Endowment of the Arts survey, the proportion of adults who read at least one book a year had fallen from 55% to 48%. With more people spending time on phones and social media, books were expected to become obsolete.
But Gooch attributes the resurgence to community support.
“There’s been a renaissance in independent bookstores since 2020,” Gooch said. “I think people realized if we don’t support these things locally, they go away, and we don’t have these things locally.”
Social media apps like TikTok and Instagram have also helped steer readers back to bookstores. Local creators such as @Kristyleighreads, @youngblackmayor and @Kennagriffin0 are turning books into viral sensations.
“Sometimes a book that came out 10 years ago, I’ll suddenly come in and have people asking for it,” Gooch said. “Social media is a double-edged sword. And one of the good edges of it is #Booktok and #bookstagram really have gotten a lot of people back into reading.”
As the Floating Bookshop heads into the new year, Gooch is looking forward to more people supporting local authors and bookstores.
“We’ve got a great local bookstore ecosystem in Oklahoma City,” Gooch said. “Everybody kind of does things a little bit differently, which is the brilliant thing about independent bookstores versus a Barnes & Noble or a Target or a Walmart. You walk in this bookstore, and you can tell our fingerprints are all over the collection in here.”
