A rare hypercar just shattered records, becoming the most expensive new car ever sold at auction
Gordon Murray’s S1 LM has rewritten the record books, becoming the most expensive new car ever sold at auction. The figure, an astonishing $20.63 million, was achieved in Las Vegas during the Formula One weekend, proving that even in a market saturated with exclusivity, rarity still reigns supreme.
It’s the kind of sale that makes you wonder if Murray might be second-guessing his decision to limit production to just five cars.

When the S1 LM made its world premiere at Monterey Car Week in August, Gordon Murray Automotive confirmed that all five cars had already been snapped up by a single buyer.
Who that collector is remains unknown, as does the reason for parting with one of these ultra rare cars. What’s clear is that its appearance at RM Sotheby’s set off a flurry of bids, ending with a sale price that guarantees the S1 LM a spot in the record book.
The spectacle began well before the bidding started. The S1 LM show car was flown in by helicopter, descending into the auction setting with the kind of theatre that only a car of this calibre could command.
The winning bidder, aside from taking ownership of a hypercar built by one of the industry’s most respected engineers, will now collaborate directly with Gordon Murray to tailor every detail of their S1 LM. Not only that, but they will also be able to enjoy development drives with Dario Franchitti as GMSV puts the car through its paces.
While Gordon Murray’s T.50 has been touted as the modern-day interpretation of a McLaren F1, the S1 is even more jaw-dropping and sticks much closer to the design of the F1, but with a modern flair.
Like the T.50, the S1 LM is powered by a naturally aspirated Cosworth V12 displacing 4.3 liters and developed specifically for this car. It pumps out more than 700 hp, revs to 12,100 rpm, and is coupled to a six-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. Gordon Murray is targeting a weight of just 2,150 lbs (957 kg).
