Ferrari’s latest one-off is a tribute to one of the most legendary prancing horses of them all.
The Italian sportscar maker unveiled the SC40 over the weekend. The unique build is based on the current 296 GTB but features an all-new body that takes several design cues from one of the marque’s most iconic poster cars, the F40.
Ferrari’s second halo car may have been designed by Pininfarina, but its latest owes its muscular visage to Ferrari’s in-house Styling Centre, which is led by Flavio Manzoni. It’s easy to tell that the SC40 and 296 are related, but the latter, which is finished in bespoke shade called SC40 White, features bolder lines and sharper edges. The homage is more subtle than that found on most tribute cards, but the F40’s distinctive styling can be seen in the newer vehicle’s nose, side ducts, louvred engine cover, and, of course, its prominent rear wing. That last feature is also engraved with the one-off’s name, a feature of the original car are sure to appreciate.
The vehicle’s interior has been treated to a lighter touch. The two-seat cabin looks almost identical to that of the 296, with one big exception, several elements—including the steering wheel, dashboard inserts, and seatback—are covered in Kevlar, a material chosen specifically to recall the F40.
The SC40 may no longer look like your average 296, but it will drive like one. Ferrari says that the one-of-a-kind build’s chassis and powertrain have been left relatively untouched. That means that the car is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6. This mill may have two less cylinders than the F40’s twin-turbocharged V-8, but it makes up for this deficiency with an electric motor. The hybrid setup, which is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, makes 819 hp, which is about 340 hp more than its predecessor. Ferrari didn’t release performance figures for the vehicle, but the 296 can sprint from zero to 62 in 2.9 seconds and reach 205 mph.
Ferrari also didn’t say how much the SC40 cost, but we’d be willing to wager it cost far more than the 296’s $346,950 starting price. You also won’t get the chance to buy the car anytime soon, since it is a true one-of-one, but it will be on display at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello for at least a little while.
