This month, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) ranked America’s most-frequently stolen vehicles, setting the stage for the following findings.

"Muscle cars have often topped this list, as thieves are attracted to vehicles with high horsepower," said Matt Moore, chief insurance operations officer at HLDI and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Car thieves seemed to be particularly interested in pickup trucks and other expensive or high-horsepower models, IIHS and HDLI said.

Theft claim frequency for Chevrolet Camaros jumped significantly in 2023 and continued to climb through 2024, according to IIHS and HDLI’s research. The model years that had more theft claims were 2016-2024.
IIHS and HDLI suggested this was because beginning in 2016 and onward, keyless start systems were introduced into Camaros.
California and Texas were among the top two states to see a spike in Camaro thefts. Other states included Tennessee, Mississippi and Maryland.

General Motors launched similar initiatives to Hyundai and Kia which offered consumers free anti-theft software updates for newer models, however this didn’t help the older models that were being stolen at a higher rate.
Automakers then began offering software upgrades for older models to deter further thefts.
