Car prices are getting out of hand – most reliable new cars now sit close to fifty grand.
So if you’ve got a $30,000 ceiling, it can feel like there’s nothing out there for you.
But Consumer Reports just dropped a fresh list of the most reliable, affordable new cars and SUVs.
And there are still some seriously solid options that meet that $30K price tag.

Consumer Reports split its winners into a few clear groups.
Each one scores well for reliability, safety, and everyday value.
From crossovers to compact sedans, here’s where your money actually stretches.
Starting with the compact crossovers, two nameplates made the cut: Mazda’s CX-5 and Kia’s Sportage.
The CX-5 keeps proving that ‘budget’ doesn’t mean ‘boring,’ offering a quiet cabin, sharp steering, and interior that punches way above its pay grade.
Its fuel economy isn’t stellar, and the infotainment takes patience, but that’s nitpicking.
The Sportage, meanwhile, goes big on space and comfort, and delivers a solid mix of value and reliability.
Drop down a size and you’ll find four subcompact crossovers endorsed by Consumer Reports: Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30, Chevy Trailblazer, and Toyota Corolla Cross.
The Honda HR-V tops the chart overall for practicality and ease of use.
The Mazda CX-30 wins hearts for looking expensive and driving like a sporty hatchback.
The Chevy Trailblazer sneaks in as the cheapest of the bunch – roomy, reliable, and easy to live with.
While the Toyota Corolla Cross keeps Toyota’s reputation for bulletproof dependability intact.
Prefer something smaller?
The compact car segment is stacked.
If you’d rather stick with a sedan or hatch, Consumer Reports found six compact cars that still deliver real value.
Toyota dominates the shortlist with the Corolla, Corolla Hybrid, and Prius – dependable, efficient, and built to outlive your loan.
Mazda’s 3 earns praise for feeling a class above its price tag, while Hyundai’s Elantra Hybrid quietly steals the spotlight with top-tier mileage and sharper handling.
Subaru’s Impreza rounds it out with all-wheel drive and everyday usability, and the Nissan Sentra keeps things honest for buyers chasing a low sticker price.
Across the board, these are reliable new cars that make sense – no frills, no fuss, just good machines built to last.
You know what’s nice? Cars that just do their job.
No flash, no fuss.
They start in the morning and get you home at night.
Somewhere along the way, that became aspirational.
And honestly, fair enough.
People are done with range anxiety and finance plans that never end.
They just want something solid.
Something that lasts.
These reliable new cars and SUVs under $30,000 are simple, honest, and good at what they’re built to do.
