A perfectly preserved 1966 muscle car is heading to auction, looking fresher than many new vehicles
Every so often, a classic American machine resurfaces looking like it has been trapped in a time capsule. This 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS is one of those rarities, heading to auction with Mecum next January. It looks absolutely pristine, allowing it to serve as the perfect antidote for modern muscle cars, many of which have become digital tech fests.

The auction house has not stated how many miles this Impala SS has been driven, but regardless of what that number is, it’s clearly been well cared for and looks just as good now as it would have when it first rolled out of Chevy’s factory nearly 60 years ago.
Black Tie Finish
Adorning the exterior is a deep shade of black that looks to have been freshly detailed and appears completely void of any major defects. The chrome across the front and rear bumpers also looks as good as new, as do the original wheels that the car continues to sit on. The lengthy bodywork, combined with the lack of B-pillars, adds to the incredible design of the car.
It’s a similar story in the cabin. The seats and dashboard are trimmed in black and look just about perfect. Similarly, the dashboard, steering wheel, and transmission tunnel show little to no signs of wear, likely suggesting the car has been restored at some stage. Even if this Impala had been locked away in a garage for the past 59 years, we would have expected to see more signs of degradation in the cabin.
Found under the hood is a 327 cubic-inch V8 engine that produced 275 hp when the muscle car was new, paired to a four-speed manual transmission that drives the rear wheels. Mecum hasn’t released a pre-auction estimate for the car, so it will be interesting to see how much it will go for once bidding begins at the Kissimmee 2026 event in January.
