Gordon Murray’s latest hypercar is already setting records.
The first Gordon Murray Special Vehicles S1 LM sold for over $20 million this past weekend at RM Sotheby’s Las Vegas Grand Prix sale. Any eight-figure gavel price is stunning, but this particular one makes the speed machine the most expensive new car ever sold at auction.
The winner won’t get to take home a car for their money, though. Instead, what they’ve bought is the fifth and final S1 LM build slot, though their car will be the first to roll off the production line. That’s why the final gavel price—of $20.63 million—is considered a record. Earlier this year, the one-off 2025 Ferrari Daytona SP3 “Tailor Made” hammered at $26 million, but it had already been built at the time of sale.
Announced during this year’s Monterey Car Week, the S1 LM is meant to be a celebration to the 30th anniversary of the Murray-designed McLaren F1 GTR’s overall win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It is also the first model that will be built by Gordon Murray Automotive’s newly established bespoke division, which aims to work with “visionary customers to create unique, ultra-low volume vehicles.”
It also sounds as if it will be something truly special. Based on GMA’s sold-out T.50, the car has a sleek and center-drive position inspired by the iconic F1. Even more impressive, though, is a naturally aspirated, Cosworth-built 4.3-liter V-12. The mill makes over 700 hp, which is routed to the rear axle by a six-speed manual gearbox. Add in a 2,100-pound curb weight, and you have yourself something that should be fun to drive.
This weekend’s winning bidder will get to work directly with Gordon Murray Special Vehicles to create the car. As part of the process, they will sit in on and contribute to design meetings and participate in developmental drive sessions. They will also get to meet with Gordon Murray Automotive Executive Product and Brand Director (and three-time Indy 500 winner) Dario Franchitti and Murray himself.
