The vehicle belonged to a top Russian scientist working for the Stelmakh Polyus Research Institute, a major military-linked laser and quantum-electronics centre in Moscow.
However, the scientist remains unharmed as he is understood to be away on a business trip.
At first it was not known whether anyone was in the vehicle when it exploded but it was later confirmed that no one had been hurt.
Dramatic footage shows enormous flames around the car, followed by its burnt out remains.
