Toyota is teasing a new supercar with a billboard at Fuji Speedway, showing a small glimpse of the car's front end.
The high-performance is expected to reach the U.S. wearing a Lexus badge, possibly called the LFR. It will also form the basis for the brand's next GT3 race car.
A twin-turbocharged V-8 paired with electric motors is rumored, but more details are expected next week.
Toyota has been making fun cars again for a while now, and the Japanese automaker is planning to go even further with a high-performance coupe. We've seen this new model testing in camouflage for over a year now, and it appears we won't have to wait too much longer until Toyota's highly anticipated supercar is unveiled. The automaker teased the new GR-badged car with a billboard at Fuji Speedway in Japan.
The sign shows close-up images of three cars: the classic Toyota 2000GT of the 1960s, the legendary Lexus LFA, and the company's next-generation supercar with a GR logo in its grille. We can see a sharp, angled headlight, the right edge of a trapezoidal grille, and large vents ahead of the front wheels. Toyota has also launched a website with a countdown to Monday, which promises several announcements across Toyota's brands, including Lexus, Daihatsu, the performance GR division, and the luxury Century subbrand.
While the billboard points to this supercar being revealed with a Toyota badge, we expect this new model to arrive in the United States wearing a Lexus logo. We first learned about this vehicle over three years ago, when David Wilson, then president of Toyota Racing Development, said that the company was working on a next-generation sports coupe to succeed the RC and form the basis for a new GT3 car.
The RC was axed earlier this year, and the RC F GT3 race car is only eligible for one more season in IMSA's GTD Pro and GTD classes. At the time, Wilson hinted that this new car could be similar to the Toyota GR GT3 concept shown at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon, and that concept looks awfully similar to the prototypes of Toyota's new supercar that have been spotted testing everywhere from Southern California to the Nürburgring race track in Germany.
The Toyota/Lexus supercar also made its dynamic debut at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed. Wearing a dazzling camouflage wrap, the coupe ripped up the hillclimb course in both roadgoing and track specifications. The supercar is expected to be powered by a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine assisted by electric motors. Look for more information to be released on Monday.
