A driver died when he tried to go around lowered crossing arms at a railroad crossing in Clayton on Monday.
The crash occurred around 10:50 a.m. at the intersection of Central Street and Main Street, according to a town spokesperson. Police said the driver of a Toyota Corolla made a left turn onto Central Street and tried to drive around the crossing arms, both of which were down at the time of the crash.
The train hit the left side of the car, which landed about 300 feet away from initial impact.
Police identified the driver as Bryant Dwayne Alton. Alton, 62, lived in Clayton.
No one on the train was injured.
Earlier this month, a 21-year-old Wendell woman died when she was hit by an Amtrak train in Clayton near Front Street.
