A section of Fairview Road has reopened in Raleigh after a large tree fell during Monday night’s storms, crushing a pickup truck and damaging two other cars.
The WRAL Breaking News Tracker was there at 11 p.m. when the fire department arrived. The tree fell on top of a pickup truck and two other vehicles parked in front of a home between Myrtle Avenue and Jarvis Street.
The couple renting the home told WRAL News they heard a loud noise around 11 p.m. They had to climb out the window of their home and over a fence to survey the damage in their yard.
“I was half asleep and she was awake,” Sai Graham said. “The next thing I know she was rushing out the door because there was a huge sound. We come out here and see all of this … it was dark and all we see is this giant tree. We had to climb up our fence because it kind of ruined our stairs.”
The renters said the tree crushed their vehicles, covering them in debris and leaving them unusable.
“Our cars are under there, barely visible, and both of them with, from what we can see, dents at least at the top,” Graham said.
“This whole street was covered with trees last night,” Averi Zimmermann, his fiancée, said. “I think the rest will be up to the homeowners, and I assume they will un-trap us from our driveway.”
Tree removal crews used a crane and hefty equipment to remove the tree from the roadway around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. Crews returned to the scene several hours later to remove the large trunk from the pickup truck and sidewalk, which both sustained damage.
If a tree falls, who pays to clean it up?
Fairview Road was closed for hours but reopened by 8:30 a.m.
Duke Energy’s outage map did not show any homes without power in the area.
WRAL News is working to learn how much damage the tree caused.
Regular homeowners’ insurance covers damage to your home from fallen trees. Insurance also typically pays up to $500 for tree removal, but only in certain circumstances:
When trees fall in your yard, you have to foot the bill to remove them.
