Two women from Telangana died in a road accident in the United States, their family members said on Monday. The victims, Meghana Rani and K Bhavana, both 24, were killed in Bishop City, California, at around 3 AM (IST) while they were on a tour. The car crashed and fell into a gorge, according to reports.
Both women were natives of Garla and Mulkanoor villages in Mahabubabad district and had travelled to the US to pursue higher studies, reported PTI, citing police sources.
Their families, reeling from deep shock and grief, have urgently appealed to the Telangana government and the Ministry of External Affairs for support, the reports said. They have reportedly sought assistance in coordinating with the Indian Consulate in San Francisco to fast-track the required procedures and bring the bodies back to India at the earliest for the last rites.
Authorities in California are probing the cause of the accident, and members of the Telugu community in the United States have stepped in to help the bereaved families during this trying period, it added.
Meghana’s father, Nageshwara Rao, operates a Mee-Seva centre in Garla, while Bhavana’s father is the deputy sarpanch of Mulkanoor village, reported India Today.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page has been launched to assist in covering the costs of bringing Meghana’s body back to India, as her family is reportedly facing financial difficulties. It said, “Any contribution, no matter how small, will help us give my sister a dignified farewell and will mean more to us than words can express.”
