Two pedestrians landed in the mangroves near Fort Myers Beach after a car hit them.
About 1 p.m. Thursday, August 14, the Fort Myers Beach Fire District responded to an accident at the intersection of San Carlos Boulevard and Siesta Drive, Fire Chief Scott Wirth said in a press release.
The intersection is near Beach Pottery on the mainland.
The pedestrians were thrown into the mangroves along the roadway, where rescue crews found them and the car.
Firefighters cut through the mangroves to reach the pedestrians, who had sustained traumatic injuries. Both victims were transported to the hospital.
There is no further information on the victims’ condition, the release stated.
The driver of the vehicle was assessed for injuries after being removed from the vehicle, but refused care or transport to the hospital.
As of July 31, there has been 7,958 crashes in Lee County.
Of those crashes, 187 have involved a pedestrian. Six pedestrians have died in Lee County crashes this year, according to the Florida Highway Patrol’s Crash Dashboard.
