Two West Geauga Schools students were hit by a car at a bus stop at the Kiwanis Community Center parking lot, 1486 View Drive in Newbury Township, at 8:09 a.m., according to a report from the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office.
The 7-year-old boy suffered a head injury and was hospitalized at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, and a 13-year-old girl suffered a broken leg and was transported via emergency helicopter to UHGMC, the report said.
The 20-year-old driver, who was taking her sister to the bus stop, did not know she had hit the children at first, according to the sheriff’s report.
“She was distracted when she pulled into the parking lot by her little sister in the backseat and turned around to talk to her, and when she did that, she ran over two kids that were waiting for the bus in the parking lot,” Geauga County Sheriff Scott Hildenbrand said in a follow-up interview.
The school district sent out an email to parents this morning notifying them of the accident.
“We want to make you aware of an accident that occurred at a bus stop this morning, prior to the arrival of the school bus,” it read. “Some students who witnessed the incident are receiving additional support at Westwood and Lindsey. We will continue to monitor the situation. Thank you for your understanding and support.”
Hildenbrand emphasized the importance of avoiding distractions while driving.
“This is what happens when you’re distracted,” he said. “You need to pay attention when you’re driving. You need your full attention to (drive) because in this example, somebody got hurt because of it.”
The accident is currently under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office.
