A two-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit while riding his balance bike on a pedestrian crossing in Melbourne’s southeast overnight.
The toddler was with his father on Thames Promenade, near the intersection of Mulkarra Drive in Chelsea Heights, at 9.10pm when a white van struck him, police said.

“An off-duty police officer stopped to assist the child, who was then worked on by emergency services at the scene,” police said in a statement.
Detective Acting Sergeant Leigh Miller told 3AW that the father was uninjured, but the boy is on life support.
“They’ve got a green light to cross the road, the boy has ridden ahead of his father, and sadly, the car failed to see the boy and he has been struck,” he said.

The Royal Children’s Hospital has confirmed the child remains in a critical condition. Paramedics say they transported the boy to the hospital with upper body injuries.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating.
The driver of the van, a 29-year-old man from Clyde, stopped at the scene and was arrested, interviewed, and released pending further inquiries.
A resident who neighbours the crossing, who did not want to be named, said he heard what he thought was “a minor traffic accident” at about 9pm on Monday.
“One gentleman, who I gather was a witness to the whole scene, was arguing with another person to ‘sit down, sit down, ’” he said.
“Someone was trying to calm someone down or keep them restrained. Once police arrived, everything sort of simmered down, and then the questioning and investigations began.”
The man said Thames Promenade was a busy road and the main connection between two major highways: the Nepean and the Mornington Peninsula Freeway.
