BOUNTIFUL, Utah (KUTV) — A Utah Highway Patrol car was involved in the crash that created significant delays on the southbound I-15 in Bountiful early Thursday morning.
Cpl. Eddie Wright with Utah Highway Patrol said two troopers were performing a traffic stop in the area of 400 North just before the crash. During the traffic stop, passing motorists were reportedly failing to slow down and move over for the troopers.
"The rear trooper began moving from the shoulder into the far right lane to stop one of the vehicles that had failed to move over," said Wright. "As he moved into the right lane, he was struck from behind by another vehicle."
The vehicle that struck the back of the Utah Highway Patrol trooper rolled into the left lane after the crash and struck another car that turned out to be an unmarked Unified Police Department patrol car.
Cpl. Wright said there were minor injuries to those involved. It is unclear what injuries, if any, the Utah Highway Patrol trooper suffered.
The crash shut down all but one lane around 6 a.m. By 6:30 a.m., emergency responders were able to reopen all but the right-most lane. The crash was cleared just moments later.
"We kindly remind motorists to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles to ensure the safety of our first responders," said Wright.
At the peak of delays, traffic was heavily slowed for at least four miles from the crash site, with backups stretching as far as the West Davis Corridor interchange in Farmington.
Drivers were warned to expect delays and use an alternate route, such as Legacy Parkway. Residual delays carried over after emergency crews left the scene.
