Recent figures from Autotrader indicate that demand for new cars in the UK remain resilient after plate change in September, with the platform observing a 6% year-on-year (YoY) rise in visits for new cars, in October so far.
There is an increase in both the number of discounts available and the volume of advertised stock.
The MG S5 continues to be the most sought-after new electric vehicle (EV), with a 6.6% share of enquiries this month.
MG's presence is strong in the EV market, with four of the top five most inquired about new EVs being from its range.
The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is also performing well with a 6.2% share of enquiries, indicating that established brands are still competitive.
MG leads the electric brand leaderboard with 20.4% share of all new electric enquiries, followed by Renault at 8.3%.
BYD is also making inroads with UK consumers, ranking third with a 6.9% share and outpacing traditional market leaders such as BMW and Volkswagen.
Land Rover has achieved a high level of consumer interest, leading the brand chart for new car enquiries in October.
The Jaecoo 7 has been the most popular new car across all fuel types for the third month in a row, with a 4.9% share.
While the average discount on new cars has decreased slightly from 10.1% last month to 9.8% this month off the recommended retail price, and EV discounts have also seen a minor reduction, the industry is not slowing down in its promotional efforts.
So far this month, the volume of new cars being advertised on Autotrader has risen by 6% compared to last year.
Autotrader performance director Bex Kennett said: “We may be entering what is traditionally the market’s quieter period, but new car demand remains reassuringly robust thanks to the industry’s efforts to maintain consumer interest.
“The Electric Car Grant has also helped to entice new car buyers looking for greater EV affordability, which the popularity of MG and Renault highlights is vital to greater adoption.”
Prior to this, Autotrader reported an uptick in the attention towards electric vans from UK tradespeople, with the platform noting a 75% surge in views for electric vans last month, reaching 89,414, in comparison to September 2024.
"UK new car market demand remains resilient after plate change: Autotrader" was originally created and published by Motor Finance Online, a GlobalData owned brand.
