A man was killed and his 6-year-old son critically injured Wednesday afternoon when they were struck by a vehicle while walking in east Vancouver.
In an update Wednesday evening, the Vancouver Police Department incorrectly said the boy had died from his injuries. As of midday Thursday, he remained in critical condition.
“There was miscommunication on behalf of officers and responders at the scene who did not conduct proper consultation with medical personnel at the hospital prior to the information release,” the police department said Thursday. “We are deeply sorry for any distress this error has caused.”
Police responded to the crash about 1:20 p.m. in the 6400 block of Northeast 137th Avenue, according to a news release.
Upon arrival, police said first responders found the father lying in the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The boy was found in a ditch about 10 feet away from the crash site and taken to Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland, the news release states.
Authorities did not identify the father and son. But a GoFundMe organized by someone who appears to be a family member identifies them as Jose “Pequi” Quevedo-Sanchez and Joshua “Joshy” Quevedo.
In a message to the Burnt Bridge Creek Elementary School community, Principal Thelina O’Daniel confirmed that a first grader was struck by a car on their way home while crossing the street with a family member.
The school planned to have additional counselors there Thursday to provide extra support for students and staff.
The 73-year-old driver, identified by police Wednesday evening as James H. Paulson, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide. Paulson was booked into the Clark County Jail on the allegation, as well as DUI, police said.
Police had said earlier Wednesday that reckless driving, speed and possible impairment were factors in the crash.
Paulson was scheduled to make a first appearance on the allegations Thursday afternoon in Clark County Superior Court.
The police department’s traffic unit is continuing to investigate.
