ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Icy and wet weather wreaked havoc Monday in Southcentral Alaska, resulting in treacherous driving conditions.
In one instance, video captured at 9:54 a.m. by Borealis Broadband shows a driver losing control in the northbound lanes of the Glenn Highway near the Eagle River weigh station and sliding backwards into a light pole, knocking it over onto the roadway.
The car slides from the far left lane and skids in front of another vehicle, narrowly missing it before colliding with the pole.
The driver did not sustain any major injuries, according to a spokesperson with the Anchorage Police Department.
The video shows several cars and trucks driving over the pole after it landed on the road. The pole was partially pulled off the highway when a passing flatbed truck ran over it.
The video also shows military members — who were parked nearby at the weigh station pulloff — jumping into action to help the driver before pulling the light pole completely off the highway only minutes after it fell.
Freezing rain greeted residents of Anchorage, Eagle River, and the Mat-Su on Monday as temperatures hovered around freezing. The slick roads were enough to cancel schools in Anchorage for the day.
