Volkswagen brand has merged its two naming systems so that its future battery-electric cars will wear the familiar nameplates of the combustion-engine model closest in size, starting with the ID Polo.
The ID Polo electric hatchback will launch in 2026 and will be sold alongside the combustion engine Polo, which first went on the market in 1975.
“Our model names are firmly anchored in people’s minds. The ID Polo is just the beginning,” VW brand CEO Thomas Schäfer said in a statement Sept. 3.
VW introduced the ID name for its all-electric cars in 2018 with the ID3 compact hatchback. The ID letters identified VW’s all-electric cars as a standalone range and and stood for advanced technologies and electric mobility, the brand said. The ID range now covers VW’s BEVs up to the Passat-sized ID7.
VW said it will transfer the more established names of its combustion engine cars to the electric portfolio with each new model generation. VW’s combustion engine models will continue to be sold under their current names.

The renaming decision would “help customers navigate the brand’s product range more easily in the future,” VW said.
“A model like the Polo shows just how powerful a name can be: it stands for reliability, personality and history. That’s precisely why we are giving our ID models names that arouse emotions and are anchored in people’s everyday lives,” VW sales head Martin Sander said in the statement.
VW will unveil the ID Polo with a camouflage wrap on Sept. 7 ahead of its public debut at the IAA Munich auto show, which takes place from Sept. 9-14. VW previewed the car with the 2023 ID2 All concept.
VW will also unveil a concept previewing an SUV version of the ID Polo. The production version of the concept will be called the ID Cross. It will be launched at the end of 2026 as the electric counterpart to the T-Cross combustion engine small SUV.
The ID Polo and ID Cross are part of the Volkswagen Group’s four-model push into the cheaper EV space which includes the Cupra Raval small car and Skoda Epiq. Production versions of the Cupra and Raval will also be shown in camouflage at VW’s preshow event on Sept. 7.
Prices for the ID Polo will start at under €25,000 ($29,000), VW has said.
The ID Polo will compete against new electric small cars such as the Renault 5, BYD Dolphin Surf and the Citroen e-C3.
The ID Cross will go up against a broader set of competitors including the BYD Atto 2, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Ford Puma Gen-E, Kia EV2 and Fiat Grande Panda.
