Two car fires on the Coast Road in Wallsend have seen one person be taken to hospital amid major traffic disruption during rush hour. The A1058 was closed in both directions at one stage, with emergency services dealing with the blazes at the scene.
The fires were caused by a collision which happened between the A186 Station Road and the A19 Silverlink roundabout, towards the Tyne Tunnel trading estate. It was initially just the eastbound carriageway that was closed, however both directions were blocked for a short time in order to ensure the vehicles could be recovered.
Images from the scene clearly showed the flames, with smoke rising from the wreckage of the cars. One lane remains closed at the time of writing, with queueing traffic in the area, delaying North Tyneside commuters in getting home.
While the incident was ongoing, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said the following: "We have two appliances on the scene where two cars are on fire following a road traffic collision. Police and ambulance have also been requested."
The North East Ambulance Service added: "We received a call to 999 at 4.55pm from police today (11 September 2025) to reports of a three vehicle road traffic collision on the Coast Road near Tyne Met College in Newcastle. We sent two emergency ambulance crews and took one patient to Cramlington hospital."
We have also contacted Northumbria Police for comment, and are awaiting a response.
