Waymo has been granted the first-ever permit to test its self-driving cars in New York City. Mayor Eric Adams announced that the company can now deploy a fleet of up to eight vehicles in parts of Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn until late September 2025.

This is a significant step for Waymo, which previously announced its plans to test its driverless system in ten new cities this year. While the company has done some mapping in New York City since 2021, this is the first time it has received an official “testing deployment” permit.
For now, the permit requires a human driver to be behind the wheel during all tests. This is due to a New York state law that prohibits the operation of vehicles without a driver. Waymo has confirmed it is lobbying to change this regulation, likely in the hopes of eventually launching a fully autonomous ride-hailing service in the city.
Under the terms of the permit, Waymo will be required to regularly report data from its testing to the Department of Transportation, ensuring it adheres to industry best practices for cybersecurity. The company will have the opportunity to apply for an extension after its initial pilot period ends.
