A woman who was out walking with her baby has been hospitalised after she was struck by a car that mounted the curb outside Blarney this afternoon.
Gardaí, the National Ambulance Service and members of the Cork City Fire Brigade (CCFB) rushed to the scene of the incident, which occurred at around 4:30 pm along the R617 between Blarney and Tower.
The woman, aged in her 30s, suffered serious injuries, but the infant was unharmed, a fact that CCFB Second Officer Victor Shine described as 'miraculous'.
Both the woman and her child were taken to Cork University Hospital for assessment and treatment. The woman's injuries have been described as non-life-threatening at this time. The driver of the car was uninjured and was questioned by Gardaí at the scene.
Traffic was at a standstill for more than an hour, and the road was briefly closed to preserve the area for a technical examination. The road has since reopened to traffic, and it's expected that Garda Forensic Collision Investigators will soon examine the scene.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident, and any drivers who were travelling in the area who may have dashcam or other video recordings have been asked to contact investigating Gardaí. A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident is ongoing.
A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene following a report of a road traffic collision involving a car and two pedestrians, that occurred at Blarney, Co. Cork, this afternoon, Tuesday 21st October 2025, at approximately 4.30 pm.
"The pedestrians, (a woman aged in her 30s, and a male infant) were conveyed to Cork University Hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.
"No other injuries were reported at the time. The scene was preserved for technical examination. The road has since reopened. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses – including those travelling in the area at the time who may have dashcam/video recordings."

Local Fine Gael Councillor, Damian Boylan, said 'his heart goes out' to the victim and commended Gardaí and the emergency services for their work this afternoon.
He said: “This was a desperately unfortunate incident; all we can draw from it is that thankfully nobody was killed, but it must have been an utterly frightening experience. My heart goes out to the woman and her family.
“I’m sure Gardaí are conducting a strenuous investigation into the circumstances of the incident this evening.”
