WESTMORELAND N.Y. — A car going in the wrong direction, which crashed, was listed as the reason for a significant Thruway closure Friday morning.
State Police located the vehicle, a 2018 Jeep, and followed it from eastbound lanes for approximately 12 miles attempting to stop the driver. The Jeep then struck a 2018 Ford pickup head on.
The operator of the Jeep was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and passenger of the Ford were airlifted to Upstate Hospital. All westbound lanes are blocked. A diversion is set up at Exit 32 westbound.
This is according to the Thruway Authority. The reported crash happened around 3 a.m. on Friday.
The significant westbound closure west of Utica and East of Westmoreland, caused a significant backup as the morning commute began.
Traffic is flowing in both directions throughout Syracuse on the Thruway.
An updated reopening time was not given by the Thruway Authority as of 6:45 a.m.
