Microsoft has announced a new initiative that expands how, where, and when you can play your Xbox games, to include your entire car.
Announced at the annual IAA Mobility Show in Munich, Germany, the latest strand of the “This is an Xbox” slogan brings Xbox compatibility to vehicles, via Xbox Cloud Gaming and in collaboration with LG’s Automotive Content Platform (ACP).
It’s a new evolution of the ACP, which is based on the WebOS LG uses in 240 million Smart TVs worldwide. ACP itself is already present — as of this summer — in certain Kia models in the United Kingdom and Europe as part of the Entertainment Package. Currently that applies to the EV3, but the EV4, EV5, and Sportage will also include this option, as well as upcoming models.
Kia owners with Kia Connect and a subscription to the Entertainment Package can, at present, access services like Disney+, Netflix, YouTube, and specific apps for kids and news, depending on subscription tier.
At present, this is available to all vehicle occupants, either through the main display on the dashboard or the optional additional screens for rear-seat passengers, but only when the car is parked. That minimizes distractions for drivers, while also allowing for entertainment during breaks such as car charging periods.
The new partnership with Microsoft will bring Xbox into that offering — although it’s not clear which tier(s) will benefit — bringing the ability for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers to play anything in the library as well as games that they already own with streaming compatibility.
You will, of course, require a controller for the service, but any compatible Bluetooth controller will suffice. From there you’d need to launch the Xbox app in the vehicle and log into your Xbox Game Pass account, and you’re ready to roll.
LG is planning to ship ACP to some 20 million vehicles — likely Kia models, along with sibling brands Genesis and Hyundai — over the next five years, and will increase the content offerings available as it does so.
There’s no date given as yet for the integration of Xbox gaming within either the Kia Entertainment Package or the LG ACP, but it’s probably going to be sooner rather than later.
