A 24-year old man has been charged with eight offences following a fatal crash in Newcastle.
Emergency services responded to the scene at about 11:15pm on Saturday after the car crashed and burst into flames.
The accused has been refused bail and is expected to face court this week.
A young driver has been charged over a crash in Newcastle, New South Wales, that left two international students dead on the weekend.
At about 11:15pm on Saturday emergency services were called to Maitland Road at Mayfield East after a car left the road, struck a power pole and burst into flames.
The 24-year-old driver and his back-seat passenger, 19, were assisted from the wreckage by passers-by.
Both were take to John Hunter Hospital with minor injuries.
The remaining two passengers, aged 20 and 21, were freed by emergency service crews and taken to hospital with critical burns.
They died a short time later.
Following inquiries by the Crash Investigation Unit police charged the driver today.
He was charged with eight offences, including two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and negligent driving occasioning death.
The driver was refused bail and is expected to face court on Wednesday.
The ABC understands all four men were from Bangladesh and were studying at the University of Newcastle.
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Belinda Tynan has described it as a "tragic loss".
"Our university community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two of our students over the weekend," she said.
The university says support is being offered to staff and students.
